Excessive Smoke
Smoke from the exhaust can indicate different issues depending on its colour. Black smoke usually means the engine is running too rich, often due to a clogged air filter or carburetor issue.
Blue or white smoke can point to oil burning, which may be caused by overfilling the oil or internal engine wear. Checking oil levels and condition is an important first step when diagnosing this problem.
Hard Starting in Cold Weather
Cold weather can make starting more difficult, especially if maintenance has been neglected. Thickened oil, poor fuel quality, or a weak spark plug can all contribute.
Using fresh fuel, ensuring the choke is properly engaged, and replacing the spark plug if needed can improve cold starting. In colder climates, keeping equipment stored in a sheltered area also helps.
Engine Vibrates More Than Usual
Excessive vibration can be caused by loose mounting bolts, worn components, or imbalanced rotating parts.
Start by checking that all fasteners are tight and that the engine is securely mounted. If vibration continues, inspect attached equipment such as blades or pumps, as imbalance there can transfer vibration back to the engine.
